Chapter 7

THE NOTES OF A WALTZ flew around the ballroom like invisible fairies as I twirled in Victor’s arms. The light of dozens of candles cast a lively glow in the white and gold hall, giving it a Christmas atmosphere that warmed my chest. The scent of lilies and champagne filled the air and tickled my nostrils. My head spun, and I giggled.

I bumped against a woman dancing behind me and tittered harder.

Victor steered me toward the balcony. “Perhaps you’ve danced too much.”

“Or I’ve had too much champagne.” I wrapped my arms around his neck, flexed up on my tiptoes, and kissed him.

Mother would be horrified. But Mother wasn’t here.

No one paid us the slightest bit of attention. No mutters, no sideways glances, and no gossip behind the ladies’ fans. I loved Paris. I loved Victor. And I hated all the rules of propriety. I wanted to shout ‘the Hell with manners’ until my throat was sore.

He sprawled a hand on the small of my back and pressed my body against his. His tongue slid between my lips, and I tasted champagne and strawberries.

A small fluttery feeling flicked in my belly, and I tangled my fingers into his hair, pulling hard. “I want you.” There, I said it, and I wasn’t ashamed or worried about looking bold. Who gave a toss?

For a brief moment, Victor remained frozen, and a hint of shame sliced through me. Had I been too bold? Before I could ask him anything, he dragged me into the shadows, far from prying eyes. My back leaned against the hard, cold wall, a relief from my heated skin. I cheered inwardly in triumph.

“I want you too.” He tilted his head and trailed kisses on my neck and décolletage.

The low neckline of the gown I’d bought that afternoon was nothing too bold or Parisienne, but more showing than my usual dresses. The small boutique in the hotel was well furnished.

“I’m sorry,” he said as his freshly shaven skin touched my cheek.

“About what?” My voice rang low and husky.

“I’ve been very selfish,” he murmured against my skin.

I ran my fingers into his hair. “What do you mean? Because you haven’t.”

He captured my earlobe between his teeth and grazed gently. I moaned, shamelessly arching toward him.

“There is no reason why we both should suffer.” He bit the top of my breast. I almost squealed. “The least I can do is pleasure you.”

I straightened. “I can wait, so we’ll have pleasure together.”

He smiled. “No, you can’t wait. I see it in your eyes. Let me do this for you.”

A thrill shot along my body, energising me. “In the dark with my shift on as usual?”

Victor hesitated for a split second before nodding. His jaw muscle twitched, and something sad shadowed his eyes. “As usual. Just as you like it. I’ll wear my shirt and won’t turn on the light. This is all for you.”

Grinning like an idiot, I grabbed his hand and rushed toward the hideous lifting machine. As much as I hated that device, it was faster than the stairs, and I liked going fast now.
